Reminiscences of Swami Abhedananda |

Reminiscences of Swami Turiyananda on Swami Abhedananda Kali Maharaj (Swami Abhedananda) at one time used to catch fish, reasoning that the Atman is immortal - it neither slays nor is slain. Learning of this, Sri Ramakrishna sent for him. He told Kali Maharaj: 'What you are saying is true. But at your state of development, before you have realized the Atman, it is not good to discriminate in that way and kill any creature. You should know that realization of the Atman is a state of attainment beyond all logic and reason. He who attains that state feels compassion for all beings. A holy man is freed from all samskaras (tendencies of the mind), but the thought-wave of compassion stays with him to the last moment of his life. Never give up the ideal of a holy man!'
